Aoife O’Leary McNeice

Historian of humanitarianism, inequality & environment

ABOUT

I am a historian, researcher and writer, and currently a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Galway. My project is a more-than-human history of hydro electricity in mid-century Ireland. In particular, I am looking at schemes built on the rivers Liffey, Erne and Lee between the 1930s and 1950s.

I completed my PhD at the University of Cambridge and was previously a post-doctoral fellow on Imagining Futures Through Un/Archived Pasts at the University of Exeter.

I am a social and environmental historian particularly interested in water, energy, landscapes, empire and archives.

I am also a public historian and I like reading the landscape as an historical text, through devotional objects or buildings.

I previously worked as a digitisation officer at the University of Edinburgh Library and the National Library of Scotland.
